Will Power has taken a bold step in his IndyCar career by signing with Fernando Alonso's A14 Management, a move that signals his intent to secure a future with the storied Penske Racing team. The two-time IndyCar Champion Power, who has always negotiated his own contracts, is now seeking assistance from Alonso's team as he prepares for his final season under his current contract.
Alonso established A14 Management in early 2022, working alongside former collaborators Alberto Fernandez Albilares and Albert Resclosa Coll. Since its inception, the agency has represented several promising drivers, including Nikola Tsolov and Chloe Chambers. Now, Power has joined their ranks, a testament to the growing influence of Alonso in the motorsport world.
“I think I can be absolutely competitive for another five years,” Power stated confidently. “You know that is the goal, to definitely keep that rolling while I’m really competitive.”
His optimism stems from a successful 2022 season, during which he won three races and secured seven podium finishes. This performance has established him as a leading contender in the series and underscores his desire to maintain his top-tier standing.
Recognizing the impending challenges of contract negotiations, particularly amid speculation surrounding Penske's interest in younger drivers like A.J. Foyt’s David Malukas, Power has opted for representation to strengthen his position. “If I wasn’t performing, I wouldn’t want to do it,” he stressed, affirming his commitment to continue competing at the highest level.
Power’s relationship with fellow driver Oriol Servia, who is now serving as IndyCar's pace car driver, provides an additional layer of support. Their past collaboration at Penske offers Power a strategic ally who possesses valuable insights and connections within the paddock. Reflecting on their friendship, Power remarked, “[Servia] has been a very good friend of mine, and I have a lot of respect for Fernando.”
Alonso himself has expressed enthusiasm about having Power on board, welcoming him with a simple yet powerful message: “Welcome champion.” This acknowledgment not only highlights the camaraderie shared among competitors but also indicates Alonso's commitment to supporting Power’s aspirations in IndyCar.
As Power looks to broaden his racing portfolio beyond IndyCar, he remains intrigued by opportunities such as the Le Mans 24 Hours, a prestigious race that Alonso has famously triumphed in. Though Power faced a family medical emergency that prevented him from participating in the Rolex 24 at Daytona two years ago, he still has aspirations to compete in diverse formats.
“I don’t want to think about anything but driving here,” he emphasized, focusing on his current commitments while remaining open to future possibilities. As questions about his contract loom, Power anticipates an uptick in speculation regarding his future throughout the season. However, he believes that consistent performance is the best way to navigate these discussions. “At the end of the day, if you’re winning races and you’re finishing very strong, that’s the best defense you have for any of that stuff,” he concluded.
Moving forward, the partnership between Power and A14 Management is a significant development in the world of IndyCar. As the motorsport season progresses, both Power and Alonso will likely be in the spotlight, with eyes keenly watching for updates on contract negotiations and the potential for Power's future endeavors beyond the IndyCar series.
