Floyd Vanwall Racing has made significant changes to its driver roster for the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans, announcing that 1997 Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve will be replaced by Tristan Vautier. This decision, confirmed on Thursday, marks a pivotal moment for both the team and Vautier as they prepare for the fourth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship season.
Villeneuve's journey in the WEC has been tumultuous, characterized by a series of challenges including incidents with AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE Evos during the Prologue test at Sebring and a mishap at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. Additionally, his participation was marred by an accident caused by a brake explosion during the race at Portimao, which raised concerns about his readiness.
Reflecting on Villeneuve’s situation, team principal Colin Kolles stated, "The situation is that we don’t feel that he [Villeneuve] is ready to go to Le Mans. His wife is pregnant and they are expecting the baby now, at the beginning of June. Le Mans is a big race. We cannot take the risk. For personal reasons and due to the fact that also the mileage is lacking, we decided to have a new driver which will be Tristan Vautier."
The 24 Hours of Le Mans, set for June 10-11, will see Vautier sharing the No. 4 Vanwall Vandervell 680 Gibson with teammates Tom Dillmann and Esteban Guerrieri, who previously partnered with Villeneuve in the initial WEC races of the season. Vautier, a seasoned driver with experience in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, brings promising credentials to the table. He achieved victory in the 2021 Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring with JDC-Miller Motorsports and is currently part of Algarve Pro Racing in the European Le Mans Series LMP2 Pro-Am class.
Highlighting his potential, Kolles remarked, "We met in Sebring and then we were thinking about options. I think this is the best choice for us at the moment. We need a solid result. This is the target. You never know what happens, obviously, but it’s my job to minimize the risks."
Kolles also indicated that the Vanwall team has a reserve driver in Esteban Muth, a former DTM competitor. However, they opted against using him due to his relatively less experience in traffic situations, stating, "Esteban Muth is a young, talented driver. But we cannot risk to go with somebody who has even less mileage, in terms of experience in traffic."
Although Villeneuve was included in the provisional entry list for the 6 Hours of Monza, Kolles clarified that any further involvement remains uncertain, emphasizing that the team’s current focus is solely on the upcoming Le Mans race.
As preparations intensify for the historic 100th-anniversary edition of the Le Mans race, the Vanwall team will aim to solidify its performance and strategy with Vautier joining their ranks. This change might provide the boost the team needs as they head into one of motorsport's most prestigious events. Understanding the gravity of the occasion, Kolles aims for a strong finish, embodying the spirit and significance of this legendary race while balancing the team's dynamics and challenges in the face of change.
