Team Penske recorded a weekend sweep during the recent IndyCar and NASCAR event at Phoenix Raceway.
Josef Newgarden won the IndyCar Series race after teammate David Malukas won the pole. In NASCAR Cup competition, Joey Logano won the pole and teammate Ryan Blaney won the race.
The weekend came during Team Penske’s 60th anniversary season. The article notes that NASCAR and IndyCar have shared the same property fewer than a dozen times in history.
Blaney spoke about the milestone and Penske’s record across multiple categories.
"I was fortunate enough to be a part of the 50th anniversary, and it's just unbelievable to see what he's done in motorsports for six decades," Blaney told ESPN. "Not only on the NASCAR side, but obviously, IndyCar and sports car. It's been neat to add a little to its history. It's fun to be a part of it."
Logano also reflected on driving for Penske. The source says Penske signed Logano in 2012, when Logano was 22 years old and losing his ride with Joe Gibbs Racing.
Since then, Logano has won 35 races for Penske. The source states that Penske has 157 wins in NASCAR Cup competition, and that Logano ranks second on the team’s all-time list behind Rusty Wallace, who earned 37 wins.
"It's fun to see [Penske] still get excited about winning," Logano told ESPN. "It's been 60 years in motorsports, that's crazy. The number of championships and race wins and all those things, eventually you could be like, 'OK, cool. We won another one.' It's not like that for Roger. He still gets very excited, still very much a kid in a candy store when you're able to win."
The source identifies IndyCar as the series most associated with Penske, while also noting his success in NASCAR and sports cars. The Phoenix weekend added another multi-series result for Team Penske during its 60th year in motorsports.
