In a strategic move ahead of the 2024 racing season, BMW M Motorsport has announced the signing of Swiss-Italian driver Raffaele Marciello as a works driver. Marciello, who has spent multiple seasons with Mercedes-AMG, is looking to take his racing career to new heights.
Marciello is no stranger to success in GT racing. He clinched the championship titles in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe in both 2022 and 2023, along with securing the ADAC GT Masters championship in 2022. His impressive race portfolio includes wins at prestigious events like the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the FIA GT World Cup in Macau in both 2019 and 2023, and the Intercontinental GT Challenge at Indianapolis in 2022.
Reflecting on his transition to BMW M Motorsport, Marciello expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead. "I’m really excited to join BMW M Motorsport and the new challenges this role will bring," said Marciello. "Being part of a team with such a rich history and involvement in multiple racing disciplines is very motivating."
Before his success in GT racing, Marciello was on a trajectory towards Formula 1. The skilled driver began his career in karting, later moving on to Formula Abarth and the FIA Formula 3 series, where he took the Euro championship title in 2013. Marciello also competed in the GP2 series and served as a reserve and test driver for Sauber's Formula 1 team in 2015.
As he joins BMW, it's anticipated that Marciello will participate in the BMW M Team WRT Hypercar program for the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), which includes the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans. Marciello's desire to compete in top-tier prototype racing was a significant factor in his switch from Mercedes-AMG, as they lack a prototype program. He stated, "One of my main reasons for leaving Mercedes was the opportunity to race at the highest levels of prototype racing, which BMW can offer."
