Peugeot is setting its sights on reliability as it prepares for the return to the Le Mans 24 Hours, emphasizing the importance of durability over speed for its 9X8 Hypercar. Olivier Jansonnie, the technical director leading the 9X8 project, has stated that the team is committed to ensuring reliability amidst the challenges that come with racing at Le Mans. "We are still working on reliability; it is the most important thing for us right now," said Jansonnie. "A clear road map was set for this year, which was to try to work on reliability. We are still in that mindset: we are trying to achieve what is possible for Le Mans.”
Despite recent clean races in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Portimao and Spa, Jansonnie indicated that the focus remains steadfast. He noted, "There is still some performance potential just by running the car more and more," suggesting that performance upgrades will come only after reliability is reliably established.
The 9X8's performance capabilities, according to Jansonnie, are clearly visible and can be optimized as the team logs more laps. However, he remained cautious about predicting precise improvements. "The ways to improve the car are still quite obvious to us, but it is difficult to say if that’s a hundredth, a tenth or several tenths," Jansonnie remarked, acknowledging the uncertainty that accompanies race preparations.
Looking ahead to the challenges of the Le Mans circuit, Jansonnie tempered expectations, stating, "To say we are 100% confident, we are not there yet." The Peugeot TotalEnergies team is not adding further endurance tests after its recent participation at the Spa 6 Hours. However, they have conducted multiple Le Mans simulations, with four preparatory runs completed between Sebring and Portimao. This strategic choice follows a difficult start to the 2023 WEC season where both Peugeot entries suffered transmission failures during the race at Sebring. Jansonnie reflected on that, saying, "Le Mans, for sure, will be a difficult one. But if you look back to where we were three or four months ago, we have improved a lot."
