Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) clinched a momentous victory at the Petit Le Mans, marking the last race with their Acura ARX-06. The win at the Motul Petit Le Mans brought a thrilling conclusion to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season. "We fought hard, and we faced some challenges through the race, but this win is a perfect way to end our Acura journey," said Tom Blomqvist, one of the drivers.
The race's final moments proved intense, especially as it finished under a full course caution due to a fire involving the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche. Jan Heylen, the driver involved, faced a precarious situation shortly after racing resumed with just five minutes left on the clock. Consequently, the No. 60 Acura, piloted by Blomqvist, eventually crossed the finish line first, but not without battling back from an early setback.
Blomqvist, alongside his teammates Helio Castroneves and the victorious Braun, showcased resilience, recovering from a two-lap deficit due to damaged toe-links caused by a collision with the Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 of Corey Lewis. "We knew we had to push hard after the incident. This win is a testament to our team's strength and determination," Castroneves stated.
Action Express Racing emerged from the shadows to claim the GTP title for the first time in this new era, thanks to drivers Pipo Derani and Alexander Sims. Despite crossing the finish line in sixth place, Derani's success in the Whelen Engineering-sponsored Cadillac was enough to secure the championship by a narrow margin of 21 points over Wayne Taylor Racing, which included Andretti Autosport’s duo of Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque.
"It means a lot to win the title, especially with the challenges we've faced this season," remarked Derani. The pivotal moment for Derani came after he collided with Albuquerque’s Acura, leaving both drivers fighting for valuable positioning. The incident led to a barrier crash for Albuquerque, who was subsequently taken to a hospital for a thorough check-up, with IMSA later announcing no further action would be taken.
The excitement didn't end there; the No. 59 Proton Competition Porsche, driven by Harry Tincknell, Gianmaria Bruni, and Neel Jani, secured an unexpected overall podium finish in third place. Their strategic decision to remain out during the race's 11th caution paid off handsomely. "We took a gamble, and it really worked out for us in the end," said Tincknell, highlighting the team’s strategy.
With the No. 7 Penske Porsche finishing in fourth place and facing its share of vibration issues toward the race's conclusion, the seasoned trio of Felipe Nasr, Matt Campbell, and newcomer Josef Newgarden still managed to secure a respectable position, while others like Mike Rockenfeller and Jenson Button's No. 5 JDC-Miller Motorsports Porsche rounded out the top five.
In a noteworthy twist, the championship race saw early contention eliminated as Nick Tandy's No. 6 Penske Porsche was involved in a multi-car crash caused by Dennis Andersen’s No. 20 High Class Racing Oreca. "It was definitely a tough moment for our team, and we could not recover after that incident," said Tandy, reflecting on the challenges faced during the race.
The class divisions also saw exciting outcomes, with the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca of Ben Keating and Paul-Loup Chatin being crowned LMP2 champions alongside their third-place finish. This solidified their position in the standings after the No. 11 TDS Racing Oreca experienced a crushing crash that put them out of contention. "We had to stay ahead of the competition, and that’s what we did today," Keating expressed.
Additionally, the No. 30 Jr III Racing Ligier claimed top honors in the LMP3 category after a late incident affected the class title-winning No. 74 Riley Ligier.
As the season wraps up, teams look to reflect on their performance and prepare for the upcoming competitive year ahead. With MSR bidding farewell to its Acura partnership, the 2024 season promises to be filled with fresh challenges and exciting prospects for all teams involved in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
