The 2016 Rally Australia, formally known as the 25. Kennards Hire Rally Australia 2016, showcased the thrilling conclusion of the World Rally Championship season. From November 17 to 20, competitors gathered in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales to tackle a vigorous set of gravel stages. Among them, it was Volkswagen's Andreas Mikkelsen who emerged victorious, sealing his position with a total time of 2:46:05.7.
"Winning this rally means a lot to me, especially being the last race of the season," said Mikkelsen, whose triumphant performance secured his third win in the World Rally Championship.
The event featured 23 stages running a total of 283.36 kilometers, presenting formidable challenges for all drivers. Mikkelsen's consistency and skill allowed him to fend off fierce opposition, including his teammate Sébastien Ogier, who finished just 14.9 seconds behind.
"We knew it would be tight with Andreas, but he drove superbly," Ogier said. "I was pushing as hard as I could. It’s a shame not to take the win, but we still have a strong season overall."
Thierry Neuville from Hyundai finished third, trailing by over a minute. "It was a tough rally, and while I wanted to challenge for the win, I’m pleased with the podium finish," Neuville explained, showcasing the competitive spirit characteristic of the WRC.
As the teams and drivers navigated through the challenging terrains of Coffs Harbour, the excitement ramped up during each leg of the rally. Each stage required not only speed but also strategic decision-making. "You learn a lot about your car and your team during these events. It’s not just about speed; it’s about working together effectively," said Mikkelsen.
Ultimately, this year's Rally Australia offered a thrilling spectator experience, filled with unexpected turns and high-stakes racing. Mikkelsen’s triumph further solidified Volkswagen's dominance in the championship, capping off a remarkable season for the team.
With the race concluded, attention now shifts to the upcoming season. As teams recalibrate and look ahead, Mikkelsen's victory strengthens his status as a formidable contender. "Next year, we come back even stronger. This win boosts our confidence going into the 2017 season," he declared.
As fans and teams alike begin to look towards the future, the competitive landscape of the World Rally Championship promises to be as exhilarating as ever, with fresh talents and seasoned champions ready to battle for dominance once more.
