In an exhilarating display of motorsport strategy and skill, Matt Payne emerged victorious in Race 2 of the Supercars Townsville 500, showcasing a strong performance that secured him his second career win and his first for the 2024 season.
Payne, driving the Grove Racing Ford Mustang GT, implemented a daring three-stop strategy that propelled him to the front of the pack with 22 laps remaining of the 88-lap race. Starting from the 10th position following a challenging Shootout lap, Payne's decision to pit early paid off handsomely. After crossing the finish line, he celebrated a comfortable victory with a margin of 6.06 seconds.
"We've had a tough couple of rounds lately and I knew we had a good race car yesterday," said Payne, reflecting on his journey to the podium. "We tried to replicate that with a different strategy from the team. We were pushing the whole way; tough work but very rewarding. To get a win here boosts the morale halfway through the season."

The competition for second place was fierce, featuring a riveting battle reminiscent of Saturday's earlier race. Cam Waters from Tickford Ford and Chaz Mostert of Walkinshaw Andretti United Ford engaged in a strategic clash, each employing different approaches. Waters chose a two-stop strategy, while Mostert, taking inspiration from Payne's success, opted for the three-stop route.
Waters managed to fend off Mostert's advances to secure second place. "It was a great day for us and a great weekend for the team, but no chance we were going to match Matty on the three-stop," Waters shared. "I knew a few people would roll the dice and try it, but we stuck to our guns and stayed with [a two-stop strategy]. It's always Chaz and I! I wish it was someone different; it was cool to battle Chaz again."

Career Journey
The race, predominantly dominated by Fords, also featured a noteworthy performance from Jack Le Brocq, who celebrated his 32nd birthday with a surprising pole position. However, despite the early lead, Le Brocq's two-stop strategy did not yield the desired race pace, preventing him from mounting a serious challenge for the victory.
