The 2024 Rally Latvia, officially known as the Tet Rally Latvia 2024, unfolded over four action-packed days from July 18 to 21, 2024, in the picturesque city of Liepāja, located in the Kurzeme Planning Region. This year marked the twelfth edition of the Rally Liepāja and served as the eighth round of the esteemed World Rally Championship (WRC), including its subcategories, World Rally Championship-2 (WRC-2) and World Rally Championship-3 (WRC-3).
Kalle Rovanperä and his co-driver Jonne Halttunen emerged triumphant, clinching the overall victory with a total time of 2:31:47.6. The team represented Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, who also secured the coveted manufacturer's title during the event. Rovanperä expressed his delight, stating, "This victory was a real team effort, and I'm proud of what we've achieved here in Latvia. It was one of those rallies that you just can't forget."
The competition was fierce, with Rovanperä’s performance reflective of his skill and teamwork. The driver underscored the challenging nature of the gravel stages, saying, "The stages here were tough, very demanding, but that made our win even more special. We had to stay focused throughout."
In addition to the main event, the rally featured a variety of support categories, including WRC-2 and WRC-3. Young rally star Oliver Solberg, partnered with co-driver Elliott Edmondson, took home the WRC-2 category title, finishing with a time of 2:40:25.5. Reflecting on his accomplishment, Solberg remarked, "Winning at this level is what I've been working for. I'm excited about the future and what we can achieve in the upcoming rallies."
The WRC-3 category saw local competitors Joosep Ralf Nõgene and Hendrik Kraav seize victory, completing the rally in 2:51:52.1. "Competing in my home country always adds extra motivation. We pushed as hard as we could, and it feels amazing to come out on top," said Nõgene, highlighting the significance of their win.
Throughout the rally, an impressive number of crews participated. A total of 40 teams registered, with 38 making it to the start line. Ultimately, 32 crews completed the rally, showcasing the competitive spirit and resilience of the drivers involved.
The event spanned 20 special stages, covering a total competitive distance of 300.13 kilometers (186.49 miles). Participants faced complexities on the gravel surfaces, which tested their abilities and adaptability. The overall transport distance for the rally was recorded at 1,048.70 kilometers (651.63 miles), culminating in a total event length of 1,348.83 kilometers (838.12 miles).
The rally not only attracted participants from various ranks, including ten Rally1 entrants, but also featured notable regional talents, enhancing local engagement. Mārtiņš Sesks and Renārs Francis, representing Latvia, garnered significant attention from their fan base during the event.
Rovanperä’s weekend was not without its challenges, as he reflected on the ups and downs of sprinting through the stages. "There were moments we had to manage our pace rather carefully, but in rallying, that’s part of the game. Every second counts,” he noted, sharing insights about strategies in high-pressure situations.
As the rally concluded, it marked an essential chapter in the 2024 season, leaving fans and participants eager for what lies ahead. The resurgence of rallying in Latvia has fortified its position within the WRC calendar, fostering excitement for both competitors and spectators across the globe. The victory by Rovanperä adds to his growing reputation within the motorsport community, while Solberg and Nõgene set a benchmark for emerging talents.
As the World Rally Championship progresses, all eyes will be on the next round, where drivers aim to build on their Latvian experiences and further their ambitions in the championship.
