Jack Perkins marked a remarkable return to the Dunlop Series with a decisive win at the Townsville street track. However, his achievement unfolded against the backdrop of a chaotic start that left the field scrambling to regain order.
As the race commenced, Perkins seized the advantage from pole position, which proved crucial as pandemonium erupted behind him. "It’s great to be back on the top step, but the start was definitely hectic," said Perkins. He quickly distanced himself from the fray as competitors engaged in a fierce battle for positioning.
The turmoil began when Brad Vaughan and Cooper Murray collided in their attempt to secure second place. In a swift chain reaction, Zach Bates also collided with Cameron McLeod’s car shortly thereafter. The incident occurred shortly after the green flag waved, with Murray struggling off the line and Vaughan pouncing for an opportunity.
"I just tried to hang back and protect my position, but the contact was unavoidable," explained Vaughan, whose Tickford Mustang sustained significant damage when it collided with the wall. This collision, combined with the others subsequently involved, created a blockage on the track, bringing the race to a sudden halt as a Safety Car was called.
Amid the melee, Matt Chahda emerged as the unexpected beneficiary, advancing from 24th to 9th position before the caution was issued. "I just focused on making the most of each corner and avoiding the chaos. I didn’t expect to gain so many spots so quickly," said Chahda.
In contrast, multiple drivers faced unfortunate retirements due to the incident, including Vaughan, Murray, McLeod, Campbell Logan, and Jordyn Sinni, though no penalties were imposed for the incident. When the race finally resumed on Lap 7, the updated order saw Perkins in command, trailed by Bates, Aaron Cameron, Max Vidau, and Rylan Gray, while series leader Kai Allen managed to stay in 10th place.
However, Bates struggled to maintain his position with the damage to his vehicle, resulting in a swift decline down the standings. "The car just didn’t have the pace after the hit, and it was hard to keep up," lamented Bates, who finished the race in 19th place, the last car on the lead lap, but still managed to score some points.
As the race progressed, Perkins maintained his lead smoothly over Cameron, the duo showcasing their driving skills until a late incident involving Dean Fiore prompted another Safety Car, ultimately bringing the race to an early conclusion.
"I felt great out there with the car’s performance, just sad we didn’t get to race to the end," said Perkins. "But a win is a win!" His victory tightened the competition, reducing Allen’s lead in the championship standings to 33 points.
Cameron’s second-place finish displayed his resilience and adaptation during the race. "I pushed hard but just couldn’t catch up to Jack by the end," Cameron stated.
Max Vidau and Rylan Gray secured the subsequent spots, finishing third and fourth respectively. Moreover, Cody Burcher, from the smaller Super3 field, achieved an outstanding ninth-place finish, marking a highlight for the group.
As the dust settles on this thrilling race, the implications for the championship are substantial.
