In a significant development for the motorsport landscape, Honda announced its intention to return to Formula 1 in 2026 as a full-fledged power unit supplier to Aston Martin. This move marks a notable comeback for the Japanese manufacturer, which departed the sport at the end of the 2021 season after a successful seven-year stint that included a World Championship title for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
"We are excited to rejoin Formula 1, especially with Aston Martin as our partner," said Makoto Oshima, Honda's head of F1 operations. This deal is particularly enticing for Honda given the forthcoming changes in F1’s engine regulations, which mandate the use of 100% sustainable fuels and emphasize the role of electrical power in engines. The new regulations resonate with Honda’s broader commitments to environmental sustainability.

Up until 2025, Honda will maintain a working relationship with Red Bull. The automaker previously kept its Foot in the paddock through a support agreement that helped both Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri secure titles in 2022. This partnership, however, has evolved as Red Bull ventures into developing its own engines in collaboration with American automotive giant Ford.

"We’re thrilled about the potential this new relationship brings," expressed Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack. "Partnering with a brand as prestigious as Honda sets a strong foundation for us to build our power unit capabilities ahead of the new regulations."

Aston Martin has actively pursued a works partner to create an engine tailored specifically for their team. Mercedes has been assisting Aston Martin with power units, gearboxes, and rear suspensions since 2009, but that arrangement will conclude in 2025. The timing couldn’t be better for Aston Martin as they seek to elevate their competitiveness in the F1 arena.
"The new engine regulations are an exciting opportunity for all teams,” Krack added. “We believe that Honda’s expertise combined with our commitment will lead to success. The focus on renewable sources of energy and innovative technologies creates a promising landscape for automakers like Honda, who are looking to develop eco-friendly solutions.
