Graham Rahal has inked a multi-year contract extension with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL), a team he has proudly called home since 2013. As he prepares for his 18th season in IndyCar, this decision reflects not only his commitment to the team but also a shared vision for future success.
"I’m extremely excited to get a new multi-year agreement in place and hopefully continue to build and improve the team," said Rahal. His enthusiasm is palpable as he looks back at the previous season, stating, "At the end of the season, we saw some glimpses of what we can and should be. Obviously, there is a lot of work still to be done to ensure that we continue to grow and get ourselves in a place for continuous success, but I’m excited about the signs that I saw."
The 34-year-old has been a figure in IndyCar since 2007, starting his career with Newman/Haas Racing in the former Champ Car series. Over the years, Rahal has also embraced a growing second career in business, which may lead him to reduce his driving role in the future. However, he remains committed to his current responsibilities at RLL.
"I have worked with Graham for the last 18 years, first as a 17-year-old in the Atlantic Series and many years as an IndyCar driver," shared Mike Lanigan, RLL co-owner. "Watching him grow and excel not only in racing, but also off the track, has been very impressive. Signing him with RLL will certainly continue to enhance the team’s ability to succeed in the competitive world we race in."
The 2023 season proved to be challenging for Rahal and his No. 15 Honda entry, marked by disappointments that reflected a step back from the previous year’s 11th place championship finish. Rahal fell to 15th in the standings, facing setbacks, including failing to qualify for the prestigious Indianapolis 500.
Despite these hurdles, there were bright spots within the team, as Rahal secured two pole positions during the season. Moreover, teammate Christian Lundgaard achieved a significant milestone by winning his first race and placing eighth in the Drivers’ Championship. This collaborative spirit and growth offer optimism as the offseason progresses.
As RLL integrates newcomer Pietro Fittipaldi into their lineup for the upcoming season, the team is motivated to improve and contend in the competitive landscape of IndyCar racing. Rahal expressed pride in representing the team’s partners, stating, "It was important to me to continue to represent them and hopefully do a great job for them as we go forward. I’m glad that we were able to come together with Mike, my dad, David Letterman, and everyone at the organization to continue together."
This multi-year extension is not only about Rahal’s continued presence in the cockpit but also a strategic move for RLL’s long-term aspirations. Rahal is expected to play an increasing role in shaping the future of the organization.
Heading into the new season, the expectations are high not just for Rahal, but for the entire team. With a combination of experience, talent, and a clear vision, RLL aims to reclaim its status among the IndyCar elite and enhance its competitive edge, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting journey ahead.
