The race for the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) title at the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship took a dramatic turn during the 26th edition of the Motul Petit Le Mans, held on October 14 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. With just over an hour remaining in the grueling 10-hour race, the dynamics of the championship shifted significantly.
Heading into the race, the top three contenders were separated by a mere 11 points, setting the stage for an intense showdown. However, it wasn't long before fate intervened. Just 74 minutes into the event, the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport's Porsche 963 faced elimination from title contention after a collision caused by a pair of Grand Touring (GT) cars. "It was unfortunate for us, but that’s racing," said driver Nick Tandy.
As the race progressed, the championship battle wobbled between the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Racing Cadillac V-Series.R and the No. 10 Konica Minolta Racing Acura ARX-06. The balance tipped when the Acura took the lead after qualifying points were awarded, leading to a fierce competition.
Things became even more electrifying with just 62 minutes left when Filipe Albuquerque in the No. 10 Acura attempted an overtaking maneuver on Pipo Derani’s No. 31 Cadillac at Turn 1. "There was a lot going on, and we made contact," Albuquerque explained. "It was a risk that didn’t pay off this time." As the Acura veered off into a tire barrier, confusion reigned—IMSA race control later reviewed the incident but ultimately decided against assigning any responsibility.
In the aftermath of this high-stakes incident, the No. 31 Cadillac seemed destined to claim the championship. Derani, along with teammates Alexander Sims and Jack Aitken, sealed their title with a conclusion of sixth place in the race. The team finished the season with a total of 21 points ahead of Albuquerque and co-driver Ricky Taylor, who managed to edge out their closest rival by merely a single point.
Reflecting on the season, Derani expressed mixed emotions. "It seems to always be the No. 10 at the very end fighting with us. But this year the race took a different direction toward the end," noted Derani, who celebrated his second IMSA championship. "I think Filipe was a little bit too optimistic there with still an hour and two minutes to go." He added, "Going through the outside of Turn 1 never really works—certainly we’ve seen that in previous encounters."
For the No. 60 Acura team, which clinched three race victories throughout the year, the day’s outcome did not diminish their remarkable performance. “We had a great season, and although today wasn't what we hoped, it’s all part of the sport,” said Taylor, reflecting on their efforts.
The inaugural season of the new GTP formula showcased a staggering level of competition across the board, with the top seven teams finishing within a narrow 60-point margin. This parity exemplified the strength of each of the four competing manufacturers. Remarkably, even Porsche Penske Motorsport’s entries finished tied for fourth, each contributing to an enthralling series of races this year.
Aitken, who has been a vital part of the No. 31 team’s endurance efforts, reflected positively on the transition into this new era. "It’s been a real pleasure to be a part of this new era. The standard of drivers, teams, and machinery competing in the series is phenomenal," he asserted. "To have such a close finale after a season full of ups and downs is amazing. It was heart-in-mouth stuff pretty much the whole way through the race, and I think we’re all still slightly in disbelief. It’s just reward for all the hard work that’s gone into this program."
As the dust settles on this exhilarating season, the IMSA community looks towards the future with anticipation. The thrilling climax at Road Atlanta has set a precedent for what promises to be an equally competitive next season, as teams continue to innovate and refine their technologies.
