As the NTT INDYCAR SERIES gears up for Race 2 during the Sukup IndyCar Race Weekend held at Iowa Speedway on July 12, 2025, the qualifications delivered thrilling outcomes. Alex Palou, driving for Chip Ganassi Racing, clinched the pole position with an impressive lap time of 17.4900 seconds, achieving an average speed of 184.014 miles per hour.
"It feels great to be on pole. The car was really good, and we managed to get a perfect lap in," said Palou, highlighting the team’s successful efforts in setting up the car for the challenging 0.894-mile oval track.
Rounding out the top three were Felix Rosenqvist in second place and David Malukas in third. Rosenqvist, competing for Arrow McLaren, posted a time of 17.4937 seconds, just 0.0037 seconds behind Palou. "We didn't miss it by much, but I think we can make some tweaks before the race to gain that little extra speed," Rosenqvist commented, indicating optimism about the race setup.
Finishing closely behind them, David Malukas secured third with a lap time of 17.5515 seconds. The Dale Coyne Racing driver acknowledged the tight competition but remained hopeful for the race. "We are all very close in terms of speed, which makes for exciting racing. I’m ready to battle it out on the track," Malukas stated confidently.
The qualifications saw several surprising turns as veteran drivers and newcomers alike pushed their limits on the high-speed oval. Notably, Josef Newgarden, a seasoned competitor and former champion, qualified in fourth with a time of 17.5566 seconds. "Just trying to find that edge; it’s tough out there, but we’re in a good spot for the race," Newgarden said after stepping out of the car.
Despite mixed results, several drivers managed to clock impressive times, underscoring the competitive nature of this year's series. Rookie driver Louis Foster finished in 16th place, achieving a lap time of 17.7025 seconds. His performance reflects the potential for newcomers to compete on equal footing with experienced drivers. "Every lap I’m learning something new; I’m excited for what’s to come," Foster expressed.
Conversely, Scott McLaughlin, another well-known driver, faced challenges during the qualifications and failed to record a time. "We had some car issues that we need to address before the race. It’s frustrating, but we’ll work on it, and I’ll be ready for the race," McLaughlin stated candidly.
Among the other notable performances, Will Power and Conor Daly secured spots in the top ten, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Power, driving for Team Penske, clocked in at 17.5800 seconds. "We’re not sitting too bad, but we can definitely find more speed before the green flag," he remarked after qualifying.
With the stage set for a fierce competition, INDYCAR fans eagerly await the main event, hoping for outstanding displays of talent and strategy on race day. With a tight field, any number of drivers could potentially win.
The race will surely be interesting as drivers adapt to the track conditions and refine their strategies based on their qualifying results. As Palou leads the pack, the challenges they face on the oval may redefine who claims victory this weekend at Iowa Speedway.
As excitement builds, it’s clear that the qualifications have set up what promises to be an unforgettable race filled with intense rivalries and breathtaking performances. Each driver will be eager to translate their qualifying times into a successful race finish, showcasing not only speed but also the keen racecraft necessary to navigate the intricacies of oval racing.
