The TireRack.com Monterey SportsCar Championship provided a dramatic race for Acura Meyer Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian, as their #93 Acura ARX-06 clinched fifth place amidst various hurdles at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on May 12, 2025. While the #93 managed to secure a respectable finish, the #60 car faced significant difficulties, ultimately finishing in 11th place.
The day began with optimism, as Tom Blomqvist and Colin Braun in the #60 car started from the fifth position, closely followed by Nick Yelloly and Renger van der Zande in the #93 car from eighth. Both vehicles swiftly moved through the ranks early on, showing promise as Blomqvist and Yelloly climbed to third and fourth, respectively.
However, misfortune struck when the #60 ARX-06 experienced issues during its mid-race driver change. Colin Braun, who took over from Blomqvist, suffered damage after being clipped by the #40 GTP machine in the treacherous Corkscrew section of the track. This setback forced him to enter the pits for repairs after receiving a mechanical black flag, severely hampering the team's chances. "Very disappointing result for us. We had a good first stint and we were running third and then it all just kind of fell to pieces for us," shared Blomqvist, remarking on the underwhelming outcome.
On the other hand, Renger van der Zande found comfort in the performance of the #93 car. "I'm really proud of the team and I think we maximized our package. We did a few days in the simulator to prepare which helped us find some things out that made the car better," he said. Maintaining a consistent pace throughout, van der Zande successfully defended against a barrage of competitors, keeping his car in the fifth position until the end of the race.
The team managed to perform admirably despite the challenges, with Nick Yelloly stating, "I think with fifth place we maximized everything that we could. It's clear that we don't have the pace that we need at the moment to fight with the other manufacturers, but as a team we can be super happy that we are performing and executing well."
The contrasting experiences of both Acura entries illustrated the unpredictability of motorsports. Colin Braun added further context to the struggles faced by #60, saying, "It was a disappointing race but Tom did a good job early on. We had a bit of a long stop, which put me out ahead of a few guys. They were on warm tires and I was on cold tires, so I got passed a bit there. And then... we had a puncture and that was pretty much our race over."
Despite the setback for the #60 team, spirits remained high within Acura MSR. David Salters, President of Honda Racing Corporation USA, expressed his gratitude for the efforts of both teams, stating, “I want to say a massive thank you to everyone at Acura Meyer Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian, and all the guys and gals on the #60 and #93 cars.”
This event served not only as a testing ground for performance but also as a learning opportunity for the team. With a test session on the horizon, Yelloly emphasized the need for improvement, anticipating a more competitive stance at upcoming races. "We always can improve from a car balance point of view—we have a test in a few weeks and hopefully we can get the Acura sorted even more and be a bit closer to them in the next event in Detroit."
The Acura team remains resolute as they head into their next challenge, determined to address their current shortcomings and build on the lessons learned from Laguna Seca. The road to redemption starts now, as they look to return stronger in the next race cycle.
