The anticipation for the 2026 Supercars Championship is building as the season opener is officially scheduled for Sydney Motorsport Park, maintaining its traditional format. This year's high-octane event will take place from February 20 to 22, continuing the trend of starting the season under lights.
"We’re excited to kick off the season in a familiar way, and the Sydney 500 is the perfect venue for that," said Thomas Miles, a representative for Supercars Australia. The track has been the host of the opening round in three out of the last five years, with the only breaks being one-off events at Newcastle and Mount Panorama.
Despite a disappointing turnout during the Friday night race of the previous year, Supercars remains committed to the opening race's time slot of 19:50 AEDT, featuring a 100km event. In an effort to boost attendance, the organization is offering free general admission on Friday night. "We hope this draws more fans to witness the excitement live," said Miles.
The schedule for the season opener includes just one practice session for the teams before they dive into qualifying, all on the same day. Both Saturday and Sunday will feature similar formats, starting with a 32-minute knockout qualifying session, leading into a Top 10 Shootout and a demanding 200km race.
Saturday's race will again take place under the stars at 19:35 AEDT, following the thrilling conclusion of last year's race, which saw Cam Waters and Broc Feeney engage in an unforgettable drag race for victory. “It was an epic showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats,” reflected Waters.
In a notable development, the new Toyota GR Supra will make its debut in the competition. This season will also mark the full-time entry of several emerging talents, including Zach Bates, Rylan Gray, Jayden Ojeda, Jobe Stewart, and Jackson Walls. "I can’t wait to hit the track with the new Supra and compete against the best," stated Bates, expressing his excitement for the upcoming season.
The event will feature a robust support card, including the opening rounds for the Super2 Series, Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia GR Cup, V8 SuperUtes, and the Touring Car Masters. The only change to the program this year is the inclusion of Super2, replacing Carrera Cup, keeping the Sydney 500 schedule otherwise nearly identical to the previous year.
Saturday night will also feature a live performance by the band Jet, creating an electric atmosphere for fans. "We’re thrilled to have such a prominent band as part of the event, making it a celebration of motorsport and music," said Miles.
As fans prepare for the season kickoff, they can look forward to an action-packed weekend deserving of its repeated honor as a premiere event. The packed schedule offers not just thrilling races but also numerous entertainment opportunities, setting the stage for another exhilarating season in Supercars.
With the excitement of the opener ahead, it is clear that the 2026 Supercars Championship is gearing up to deliver unforgettable moments for fans and competitors alike. As the season progresses, the enthusiasm surrounding the sport will undoubtedly grow, promising a year filled with thrilling races and intense competition.
In summary, the Sydney 500 is poised to deliver a memorable experience as the Supercars Championship kicks off, and with exciting new entries and a vibrant atmosphere, fans are undoubtedly in for a treat.
