The streets of St. Petersburg witnessed an exhilarating race at the 2025 Firestone Grand Prix, part of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, held on a 1.8-mile circuit. The race concluded with a time of 01:51:08.5118, featuring a remarkable average speed of 97.173 mph across the 100 laps.
Alex Palou secured first place after an impressive showing. "I can’t express how satisfying this win is, especially given the challenging conditions today," said Palou, who started in eighth position. His ability to navigate the twists and turns of the course ultimately propelled him to the top spot.
Scott Dixon, a veteran within the series, finished just behind Palou at second place. "We had a solid race and pushed hard, but it wasn’t enough to catch Alex today," Dixon shared, reflecting on his move from sixth to second. Meanwhile, Josef Newgarden rounded out the podium in third position after starting tenth. "We fought hard out there and got the car performing well towards the end, but just couldn't quite catch those front two," Newgarden commented.
The race saw intense competition, highlighted by 9 lead changes throughout its course. Notably, Scott McLaughlin led for 40 laps, including an early strong start from pole position. "It’s always a tough battle on the streets, and while I enjoyed leading, it just wasn’t meant to be today,” said McLaughlin.
On lap 89, Newgarden achieved the fastest lap of the race, clocking in at an impressive 61.6900 seconds with a speed of 105.041 mph. This performance underscored his competitiveness despite finishing third. Dixon, whose strategic maneuvers earned him multiple lead changes, also captured the fastest leader lap at a speed of 104.485 mph on lap 13. “Every lap counts, and I hoped to capitalize on the strategy we set up,” Dixon noted.
The race included six caution laps, one of which was a result of a three-car incident involving Cars 6, 12, and 45 at Turn 3. "It's a shame, but these things happen. Safety is paramount, and we’ll learn from this incident going forward," said Marcus Armstrong, who finished 24th after starting fourth.
The initial standings of the 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES emerged from the race, with Palou leading with 51 points. Dixon followed closely with 41 points, while both McLaughlin and Newgarden amassed 36 points each. "It’s just the beginning of the season; I’m excited to see where this leads us in the coming races," McLaughlin remarked after the race.
As the INDYCAR SERIES progresses, anticipation builds for the next event. Competitors will have to adjust strategies and performances, as each race can shape the championship standings significantly. Looking at the tight-knit competition that unfolded in St. Petersburg, fans and drivers alike can expect an electrifying series ahead. "We have a long way to go and every race is crucial; I’m just happy to be in the mix,” concluded Palou, solidifying his statement as the current leader of the pack.
